If you use propane in your home, there are some things you should know. First of all, propane has a solid safety track record thanks to strong regulations and high industry standards. Each propane tank is manufactured according to strict safety codes. When Briles Oil & Gas professionals installs a propane tank, they do so according to all industry, local, national, and state regulations. If you smell gas

As a homeowner, there are some things you should know for your own safety. If you ever smell gas, follow the steps below immediately:

  1. Extinguish anything that might ignite like candles or cigarettes.
  2. Don’t use any light switches, thermostats, phones or other appliances in the home.
  3. Leave your home immediately and get far away from the smell of gas.
  4. Don’t use your phone until you are out of your home and far away from the smell of gas.
  5. Close the gas shutoff valve on the propane tank or cylinder, but only if you can access it safely. Even if you no longer smell gas, don’t try to turn on the propane supply valve. For a step-by-step video on how to shut off the propane supply to your home, click here.
  6. Once you’re far away from where you smelled gas, call 911 and then Briles Oil & Gas.
  7. Don’t return to your home until you have been told it’s safe to do so by emergency personnel or the service technician.

Emergency personnel and your propane service technician will check for escaped propane gas and make any necessary repairs. Then the technician will carefully inspect you gas appliances and relight your pilot lights. Stay a safe distance away from where you smelled gas while they work.
