Safety Matters

At Briles Oil & Gas we value family. We also make a point to treat our customers like family. This is just another reason we make safety a priority for all of the services we provide. If you use kerosene in and around your North Carolina home, we want to make sure you do so safely. So let’s take a moment to review some best practices when it comes to kerosene heater safety.

When operating a kerosene heater, it is important to take steps to prevent a buildup of carbon monoxide. For this reason, you should always operate your kerosene heater in a well-ventilated room.

Here are some additional safety tips:

  1. Keep the heater and all of its parts clean an up-to-date. A dirty wick is one of the main causes for toxic fumes.
  2. Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Change the batteries and replace the units according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  3. Never leave the heater running unattended. Turn it off when you leave the room.
  4. Keep your kerosene heater on a level surface and away from flammable materials.
  5. Never try to move your heater while it’s in use.
  6. Keep children and pets away from the kerosene heater.
  7. Never add fuel to a heater that hasn’t been allowed to completely cool down. Wait at least one hour before refueling. And don’t overfill it.

Fall Kerosene Heater Maintenance

Now that cooler weather is approaching, you are likely to have more use for your kerosene heater. Here’s what to do after you take it out of storage this fall:

  1. Install new batteries.
  2. Test the shut-off mechanism.
  3. Inspect the wick for proper operation.
  4. Fill the tank with fresh kerosene. Don’t use kerosene from last fall or winter. It may have spoiled. And never overfill your heater past the “full” level.
